A holiday can be restorative for you while still being demanding for your skin. Sun exposure, heat, wind, air conditioning, chlorine, salt water and disrupted routines can leave midlife skin feeling dry, congested, sensitive or uneven when you return home.

If you are also navigating perimenopause or menopause, your skin may respond differently from one trip to the next. A post-holiday reset should calm and reassess the skin, not punish it.

Signs your skin may need a gentler routine

  • Dryness, tightness or flaking
  • Increased sensitivity or stinging
  • New or worsened breakouts
  • More visible redness
  • Uneven tone or darkening pigmentation
  • A rough or congested feeling

Cleanse according to what is on your skin

If you are wearing make-up, water-resistant sunscreen or heavier products, a two-step evening cleanse can help remove residue thoroughly. If you are not, one gentle cleanse may be enough. Double cleansing is not a rule that every person must follow twice a day.

Avoid harsh brushes, strong scrubs and very hot water while the skin feels reactive.

Rebuild hydration and comfort

Return to a simple routine with a gentle cleanser, a suitable moisturiser and sunscreen. A hydrating serum may help some skin types, but introducing several new products at once makes it difficult to identify irritation.

General hydration, regular meals and sleep support overall wellbeing, but drinking more water is not a standalone treatment for a damaged skin barrier.

Continue sun protection

UV exposure continues after the holiday. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher with strong UVA protection, and follow the product instructions. This is particularly important when pigmentation has become more visible or when restarting active skincare.

Do not rush into strong treatments

If the skin is inflamed, sunburnt or unusually sensitive, aggressive exfoliation and immediate professional treatment may be inappropriate. Allow the skin to settle and seek advice before restarting retinoids, acids, peels or microneedling.

When a nurse-led skin consultation can help

Book an assessment if pigmentation, redness, breakouts or sensitivity persist, or if you are unsure how to restart your routine. Digital skin analysis may contribute to the consultation, but recommendations should also consider your history, symptoms, products and examination.

For women in midlife, this can be an opportunity to move beyond a temporary holiday fix and build a longer-term skin confidence plan that reflects hormonal change, healthy ageing and realistic maintenance.

Skin confidence as part of a wider midlife reset

Sometimes the frustration is not only about dryness or pigmentation. It is the feeling that your body and skin have changed without your permission. Step Into STRONG, Genine’s upcoming 90-day Midlife Reset, is designed to support women through this wider transition with education, coaching, skin confidence and wellbeing tools.

Important: Seek medical advice for severe sunburn, blistering, spreading rash, signs of infection, eye symptoms or a changing mole or lesion.
