Summer can be a welcome change of pace, but heat, sun exposure, travel and changes to your routine can leave midlife skin feeling drier, more sensitive or less predictable than usual.

During perimenopause and menopause, some women notice changes such as dryness, itching, increased sensitivity or breakouts. The answer is not always a longer routine. Often, a few well-chosen products used consistently will support your skin more effectively than a crowded bathroom shelf.

Here are my practical, nurse-led summer skincare tips for protecting your skin barrier, maintaining hydration and feeling more confident in your skin.

1. Make daily sun protection non-negotiable

For day-to-day protection in the UK, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and strong UVA protection. Many people prefer SPF 50 for the face, particularly when spending more time outdoors, travelling, using exfoliating products or managing pigmentation concerns.

Apply it generously to exposed skin and follow the product instructions for reapplication, especially after swimming, sweating or towelling. A hat, sunglasses, clothing and shade remain important because sunscreen is only one part of sun protection.

For a lighter summer finish, a tinted facial SPF may work well in place of foundation. I often choose an Obagi tinted SPF, but the best sunscreen is one that suits your skin, budget and lifestyle well enough for you to use it consistently.

2. Support hydration without overloading the skin

Midlife skin can feel both dehydrated and oily, particularly when hormones, heat and stress overlap. A simple hydrating serum containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin can help the skin feel more comfortable when followed by a suitable moisturiser.

Apply products to clean skin and introduce one change at a time. If your skin stings, becomes unusually red or develops a persistent rash, stop the new product and seek professional advice rather than adding more active ingredients.

3. Keep your cleanser and moisturiser simple

Summer is not the time to attack your skin with harsh scrubs or multiple acids. A gentle cleanser and a moisturiser matched to your skin type can help protect the skin barrier while removing sunscreen, make-up and everyday impurities.

Affordable pharmacy brands can be perfectly suitable. CeraVe is one option I often mention because it offers straightforward cleansers and moisturisers at an accessible price point, but no single brand is right for everyone.

4. Be cautious with exfoliation and active ingredients

Retinoids, exfoliating acids and some professional skin treatments can increase sensitivity or require more careful sun protection. Do not increase the strength or frequency simply because you want faster results before a holiday.

A personalised plan is safer than trial and error, particularly if you have rosacea, acne, pigmentation, eczema, very reactive skin or are using prescription products.

5. Look beyond products

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses when practical.
  • Maintain regular meals, movement, rest and hydration as part of wider midlife wellbeing.
  • Avoid picking at breakouts or repeatedly changing products.
  • Keep a small, consistent routine when travelling rather than packing every product you own.

When should you book a professional skin consultation?

A nurse-led skin consultation can help if your usual routine no longer works, your skin has changed during perimenopause or menopause, or you are unsure which treatments are appropriate. At Beauty for Ashes, the aim is not to chase perfection. It is to understand your skin, identify realistic priorities and create a plan that supports natural-looking results and long-term skin confidence.

Important: Product recommendations are general and should be adapted to your skin, medical history and current treatment. This article does not replace individual medical advice.
